Understanding Tax Credits for Solar Panels

Understanding tax incentives is sometimes not easy. There is a difference with tax credits and tax deductions similar to any property that is been categorized by IRS. For solar and battery installed equipment, residential owners can get tax credits while commercial owners qualify for both incentives, credits and deductions. The deduction is the depreciation of the calculated total eligible amount over certain years. There are production tax credits (PTC) applicable to manufactures and producers. Investment tax credits (ITC) are investment made on the renewable energy property.

Commercial Solar Panel Tax Credit

  • Investment Tax Credit (ITC, Section 48): Commercial entities can claim a base credit of 6% of the investment in solar installations, with potential bonus credits increasing the total up to 30%. This credit is available for both new and existing installations on commercial properties.
  • Production Tax Credit (PTC, Section 45): Businesses have the option to claim a PTC, providing a credit per kWh of energy produced by their solar systems over a 10-year period.
  • General Credit Amount: A 30% tax credit is available for solar installations placed in service through 2032. This credit incentivizes investment in renewable energy by reducing upfront costs.
  • Eligibility: The ITC applies to solar installations on all commercial properties, including office buildings, industrial facilities, and agricultural structures.
  • Bonus Credits: Additional credits may be awarded for projects meeting specific requirements, such as using domestically produced materials, being located in energy communities, or adhering to prevailing wage and apprenticeship standards. These credits can be up to 20%, these are applicable both for ITC and PTC.
  • Depreciation Benefits: Businesses can benefit from accelerated depreciation, further reducing the net cost of solar equipment.
  • Transferability: The credit can be transferred or sold under specific conditions, providing flexibility for financing solar projects.


Residential Solar Panel Tax Credit

  • Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D): Homeowners can claim a 30% tax credit on the cost of installing solar panels, including labor and equipment. This credit is applicable to systems installed between 2022 and 2032, decreasing to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034.
  • Eligibility: The credit covers new and existing residential solar installations, making it accessible to a wide range of homeowners.
  • Cost Coverage: The credit includes expenses related to the solar panels themselves, as well as labor costs and system installation.
  • Battery Storage Inclusion: Battery storage units with a capacity of at least 3 kWh qualify for the credit, whether or not they are paired with solar panels.
  • Transferability and Roll-Over: Unused credits can be carried forward to future tax years if they exceed the taxpayer’s liability.
  • No Income Cap: The credit is available to all taxpayers, regardless of income level, ensuring broad accessibility.
  • Primary and Secondary Residences: While primarily intended for the taxpayer’s main home, the credit can also apply to solar installations on secondary residences.


Non-Profit Solar Panel Tax Credit

  • Direct Payments for Tax-Exempt Entities: Organizations like schools, hospitals, and tribal governments can receive a direct payment equivalent to the tax credit, making it easier for them to benefit without having taxable income.
  • Refundable Credits: For certain projects, particularly those adhering to domestic content requirements, credits are refundable, allowing non-profits to receive a direct financial benefit
  • Eligibility for All Sizes: Tax-exempt entities can claim these credits regardless of the project size, making even small-scale solar installations eligible.
  • Additional Requirements: Projects over 1 MW must meet additional criteria to avoid reductions in credit amounts, such as adhering to specific labor standards.
  • Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): Non-profits can enter into PPAs, agreeing to purchase electricity generated by a solar system owned by a third party, thus benefiting from solar energy without the upfront costs.
  • Grants and Incentives: Non-profits may qualify for additional grants or incentives offered by local governments or utility companies, further reducing the cost of solar installations.
  • Funding Opportunities: Solar installations can be funded through donations or sponsorships, with donors potentially receiving tax benefits, thereby supporting non-profits’ sustainability goals.

Domestic Content Requirement: Starting in 2024, projects must use a specified percentage of American-made components to avoid reductions in the refundable credit, encouraging domestic production.
